A smart friend from RCA once told me that poetry is thought made beautiful, as opposed to art, which is beauty given thought. As a designer, I of course had to ask, “well, how then do you define design?”

“Design?” she mused, “hmm...I suppose that design can be either of those things, depending upon how you approach it.”

That idea has always stuck with me through the years, and I’ve been very aware at times of channeling either the poet or the artist in my design. I do think that design needs both.

Sometimes, you have to start with the thought, the new idea, the solution to a problem, and then go make it beautiful. But other times you start with pure inspiration, unadulterated form, and then lend it purpose.
